East Texas Battle for Life
Stewart Regional Blood Center and East Texas Radio Group will kick off the New Year again with the third annual East Texas Battle for Life blood drive Jan. 2-6.
For National Volunteer Blood Donor Month the west and the east sides of East Texas are battling to collect the most units of donated blood, and help replenish the blood supply after the strain of the holidays. This competition is expected to motivate and bring together donors for the cause of saving lives. It takes a community effort to raise the blood supply levels back from critical to good.
The holiday slump has taken its toll on the blood supply for several weeks, but traffic should pick back up with the help of this event. All participating donors will receive a commemorative “East Texas Battle for Life” t-shirt.
To be eligible to donate you must be healthy, at least 17 years old, and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. Donors need to bring a photo ID, drink plenty of water, and eat a nourishing meal before donating.
The Tyler donor center is located at 815 South Baxter Avenue at the second stop sign from TJC, and the hours of operation have changed for 2007. The center will be open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m.; Thursday 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The center will be closed Jan. 1. For more information about blood donation or the blood center visit www.stewartblood.org.

Critical Levels Still Threaten the Blood Supply
The lack of blood donors during the holidays continues to prolong the supply shortage at Stewart Regional Blood Center. Seven out of eight blood types are still at critical levels.
The only solution to the blood shortage is to recruit more donors, which is difficult at this time. A variety of reasons including illness and upsurge in productivity have forced businesses and organizations to cancel their blood drives this month, according to Susan Morris, Director of Donor Recruitment. A total of 13 blood drives out of approximately 70 have had to be removed from the calendar.
“It’s not a good situation,” said Morris. “We’ll probably lose out on about 200 units of blood because of these cancellations.”
The decline in blood drives is not the only problem Stewart Regional Blood Center is facing. There will be no blood drives Saturday, Sunday or Monday. With the draw projection for Tuesday at 18 units of blood, the deficit is sure to increase unless the community responds.
“In the next 10 days we really need the community to step up and ensure that these sick patients get to see the New Year,” said Morris. “Let’s turn the season of giving into the season of giving someone a second chance.”
Every three seconds someone needs a blood transfusion. It takes close to 200 people donating every day to meet the daily needs of the hospitals we serve. Being prepared for emergencies requires that blood be on the shelf ready to be used in an instant. Blood must be used within 42 days, so donors are always needed to ensure a stable blood supply.
Of the 60 percent of Americans eligible to donate, only about five percent do. Giving blood is safe, easy and the entire process takes only about an hour. To donate blood, one must be healthy, a minimum of 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and meet other donor requirements.
The Tyler donor center is located at 815 South Baxter Avenue at the second stop sign from TJC. Monday and Friday the Tyler donor center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The center will be closed Saturday, December 23 and Monday, December 25 for Christmas. East Texas Patients Need Blood Every Day
Blood transfusions are given in East Texas every day. People depend on blood donations for a number of reasons, and urgency can rise in an instant, especially when the blood supply is low.
“To provide for the blood needs of East Texas, it’s essential to have people who donate on a regular basis,” said Lorie Schenck, Director of Corporate Communications at Stewart Regional Blood Center. “Every day we fill orders for every blood type, and it takes us collecting at least 150 units a day for there to be enough blood for all the patients in East Texas who depend on receiving it.”
All donors who give at the Tyler donor center between December 1 and December 20 are eligible to win a $50 gift certificate to Brookshire’s Grocery Company. SRBC in Tyler will draw for a winner December 22. Everyone who gives blood December 15 through December 31 will receive double ClubRed points, so don’t miss this chance to boost your account before the end of the year. For more information, visit www.clubredstore.org.
Eligibility to give blood requires healthy people who are at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. Whole blood donors can give blood every 56 days. Donors are required to bring photo identification and should drink lots of water and eat a nourishing meal before donating.
The Tyler donor center is located at 815 South Baxter Avenue at the second stop sign from TJC. Monday and Friday the Tyler donor center is open from 8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m., and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The Tyler Center will be closed December 23. Be a Holiday Hero
The definition of a hero is “a person who has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model.”
Stewart Regional Blood Center is calling on all East Texans to be a holiday hero and donate blood in the weeks leading up to Christmas and New Year’s. With increased traveling and the likelihood for accidents, the need for blood escalates during the holidays. However, the blood supply can remain sufficient if the community responds to the call of need.
Without brave, noble people to give blood, platelets and plasma, many of our friends and family members would not be alive today. When our lives become hectic and consumed by the holidays, take a moment to think of those who are special to you; the ones you would give your life for. Stewart Regional Blood Center is challenging everyone to make good on that promise. Give blood today and be a hero to someone.
A drawing for a $50 gift certificate to Brookshire’s Grocery Company will be held at SRBC in Tyler December 21. All donors who give at the Tyler donor center between December 1 and December 20 are eligible to win. Everyone who gives blood December 15 through December 31 will receive double ClubRed points, so don’t miss this chance to boost your account before the end of the year. Encourages donors to be a gift this season
Store parking lots are getting busier by the day with crowds of shoppers looking for the perfect gifts. Consider giving something different this year; something that only costs a little time - yourself.
Our theme for December, “The Greatest Gift is You,” encourages people to make time in their busy holiday schedules to roll up a sleeve and save a life. With all but one blood type in the critical to low category, it only takes a positive turnout from the community to get the blood supply back where it needs to be.
“Over 10,000 people in East Texas have donated only one time this year,” said Mark Kimberley, Tyler Donor Room Coordinator. “We’re getting ready to start a calling campaign to get these people back in here to donate.”
The goal of this movement and upcoming promotions is to get 1,500 East Texans to donate before the end of the year, the most challenging time to maintain an adequate blood supply.
A drawing for a $50 gift certificate to Brookshire’s Grocery Company will be held at SRBC in Tyler December 21. All donors who give at the Tyler donor center between December 1 and December 20 are eligible to win. Encourages People to Donate Through the Holiday
As people start their traveling rituals of the holiday season, blood donations fall drastically. Maintaining an adequate blood supply is especially difficult during the winter months when donors become scarce.
“Those of us who are healthy and can share the gift of life have so much to be thankful for,” said Lorie Schenck, Director of Corporate Communications at Stewart Regional Blood Center. “Even though it is the holiday season and everyone is busy there are still hurting people in East Texas hospitals who need your blood to live another day.”

Family Thankful for Blood Donors
Among the gifted hands of the medical staff that helped save Ruby Greene’s life, are the people who donated blood long before the car accident in September of 2004 that she miraculously survived.
Mrs. Greene, 64, was airlifted from the hospital in Palestine to Tyler because her internal injuries were so severe. There began the long road of blood transfusions, among many other procedures, Mrs. Greene would receive.
“My blood wouldn’t clot,” said Mrs. Greene. “They didn’t give me much hope at all. I was hanging by a thread.” Mrs. Greene needed whole blood to replace the blood she lost from the accident, and blood products such as platelets and cryoprecipitate to induce clotting and prevent more blood loss. Over the course of several months Mrs. Greene was given a total of 227 units of blood and blood products.
Lorie Schenck, Director of Corporate Communications at Stewart Regional Blood Center, said that blood donors are needed before events like this ever happen
“Believe it or not, more than one million people in East Texas rely on volunteer blood donors, and Stewart Regional Blood Center has drives every day to insure that blood is available before accidents like Ruby's occur,” said Schenck. “East Texas needs more people committed to saving lives by donating blood on a routine basis. The blood needs to be on the shelf, ready to use in an instant.”
“We need to collect about 150 units of blood a day to supply the needs of these patients, said Schenck. You can ask Kenneth and Ruby Greene, it only takes an instant and life as we know it can drastically change.” Mrs. Greene is just one example of how suddenly the need for blood can affect anyone, and acknowledges donating blood as a selfless act of giving. “You can do a lot of things with love,” said Mrs. Greene. “That’s why I’m here.”

Encourages Miracles
Receiving blood is a vital part of medical treatment for many people in East Texas, with the only source being people who donate.
“There is no substitute for blood, it can’t be manufactured like other drugs,” said Lorie Schenck, Director of Corporate Communications at Stewart Regional Blood Center. “Each time someone donates blood, they’re literally giving the gift of life, which is a miracle.”
Friends, neighbors and loved ones who are patients in East Texas depend on the blood donated through Stewart Regional Blood Center. With six out of the eight blood types in the critical margin, the need for donors is high.
“We invite everyone to take a little time out of their day to become miracle workers, saving lives through blood donation,” Schenck said. “During the month of October all donors at centers and on mobile drives will receive a black t-shirt featuring a mummy with the slogan “Get Wrapped Up in Saving Lives.”
Other special rewards are available to donors who commit to donate blood three times a year by joining Club Red, Stewart’s donor loyalty program. Items such as fleece pullovers, jackets, fleece blankets, t-shirts, sweatshirts, captain’s chairs, camo hats and much more can be purchased using points earned and accumulated for multiple donations. “Get Wrapped Up in Saving Lives”
Stewart Regional Blood Center encourages everyone to “Get Wrapped Up in Saving Lives,” our theme for October. We proudly offer tokens of appreciation like this, giving back to those who give of themselves to save lives.

I’ve always been scared of needles but I knew donating blood helped so many that I told myself I could do it if I just didn’t look and here I am 36 years later still donating on a regular basis, I’ve donated four times in 2006!”

Center, “As we continue National Preparedness Month, we urge healthy individuals to commit to donate blood for life; once every quarter. Our blood supply in East Texas needs to be in the good category so that we have a three day supply of blood on hand in case of natural disasters, traffic accidents, or industrial accidents. Currently all blood types are in the critical category with less than a one day supply, except for B- which is in the low category. Being prepared is the key. The blood needs to be on the shelf before an event occurs! Stewart Regional is also looking for golfers! Our “Scramble Fore Life” charity golf tournament will take place at the Emerald Bay Club in Bullard on Monday, October 2nd with a 1:00 pm shot gun start. Companies Thanked & Encouraged To Host Blood Drives
"As summer comes to an end, we at Stewart wish to thank all the businesses, church groups, communities and individuals who have made the time to make a difference by donating blood for the patients in our area hospitals who depend on us. The demand for blood continues to outpace our ability to collect it, and as we draw closer to the long Labor Day weekend, we all must be mindful of the need for more blood donations. We at Stewart are asking your help by donating blood before you leave to celebrate the holiday, and for companies, businesses, schools and churches to schedule at least four blood drives throughout the year.
This is the last week for all donors to be entered to win the Southwest Airline ticket give away and the last chance for our Tuesday/Thursday “Pint for a Pint” Haagen-Dazs donor center ice cream promotion,” according to Susan Morris, Director of Donor Recruitment, Stewart Regional Blood Center.

Be a hometown hero this Labor Day and donate blood
Stewart Regional Blood Center is calling on all East Texan’s to be a hometown hero and donate blood in the weeks leading into the Labor Day holiday. This Labor Day the need for blood will be elevated, which is inevitable considering the increased likelihood for accidents. However, the blood supply can remain sufficient if everyone contributes. When children are asked what a hero is, the response is usually a soldier, a firefighter or a police officer. These people are heroes; and so is every person who takes a few minutes of their time to donate blood, the gift of life.
Blood can not be duplicated and therefore, without brave, noble people to give blood, platelets and plasma, many of our friends and family members would not be alive today. This is not just an issue in our community, but worldwide.
Labor Day was set in place to celebrate the contributions of American workers to our country. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in July 2004, there were 147.9 million people 16 and older in the nation’s labor force, yet only one tenth of this number donated blood. The contributions to the U.S. and to our families should not stop at the workplace or the dinner table.
Just like the rest of the United States, East Texas is thriving with able-bodied eligible blood donors. The problem arises when our lives become hectic and the holidays consume our thoughts. We always tell our loved ones we would do anything for them; we’d give our lives, so Stewart Regional Blood Center is challenging each person to make good on that promise and take a proactive approach. Give blood today and be a hero to someone else.
Besides having the satisfaction of knowing that you can save up to three lives with just one donation, there are even more incentives now for you to donate blood. If you donate at one of our six locations, or at any mobile blood drives before Labor Day, you will automatically be entered to win two SOUTHWEST Airline tickets to anywhere in the continental United States. In addition, if you donate on a Tuesday or Thursday before Labor Day in-center at any of our locations, you will receive a “Pint for a Pint”. Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream has teamed up with SRBC to supply a pint of Haagen Dazs Light ice cream to every donor. Flavors are available in vanilla, chocolate or coffee.
Don’t forget about Club Red! Donors who commit to donate blood three times a year by joining Club Red will earn special rewards like t-shirts, radios, captain’s chairs, laptop carrying bags and more! Club Red is a new donor loyalty program. If you would like more information, visit www.clubredstore.org. Also, donors now have the freedom to schedule their own appointments through eDonor! Celebrate the True Spirit of Labor Day over the Next Four Weeks
Labor Day is the first Monday in September, and according to the U.S. Department of Labor, “is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country”. The well being of the country is also in the hands of those who give unselfishly to help others in need. Labor Day weekend is not only a celebration, but unfortunately a busy time for hospitals and blood centers. According to the Texas Department of Transportation in their most recent statistics; in 2001, in the first seven days of September, there were 5,842 car accidents. Life threatening car accidents can lead to a severe need for blood. Trauma victims can sometimes need as much as 100 or more units of blood. This is why it is important to donate blood now. When you donate, your blood has a shelf life of 42 days. If everyone eligible to donate would donate one pint of blood by mid-August, the blood supply would be sufficient when Labor Day weekend arrives. Stewart Regional Blood Center urges those who have never given to do so now. You never know, it might be your own life you save.
“One Church, One Community” under way across East Texas
Stewart Regional Blood Center has collaborated with the church community in their 24 county region to promote “One Church, One Community”. This promotional blood drive was created to increase the East Texas blood supply through a week of commitment and responsibility in the religious communities. One Church, One Community will take place from July 22nd through the 31st at our donor centers and in the community at various churches. SRBC is encouraging every religious organization to stress to its members the importance of donating blood and to urge them the time to donate is now. The summer season is particularly hard on blood centers and the blood supply across the nation. To accommodate in-center donors during the promotion, donor centers in Longview, Lufkin, Marshall, Mt. Pleasant, Paris and Tyler will be extending days and hours of operation. All centers will be open from 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Saturday and 12noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. In addition, interpreters will be available for the Hispanic community at our Longview, Lufkin and Tyler donor centers. You must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, be in general good health, and have a valid photo ID to donate blood.
SRBC is working hard to reach out to the growing Hispanic population in East Texas. Recently SRBC has taken steps to reach this goal by creating jobs for bilingual individuals and placing advertisement with various Spanish media outlets in the area. “Stewart Regional Blood Center recently hired a Bilingual Services Coordinator and is looking to hire many more people who are bilingual, fluent in both English and Spanish, in the future” said Melonye Rodgers, Director of Human Resources at SRBC. As the need for blood products increases the demand for type O donors is increasing, and type O blood is prevalent in the Hispanic community giving them the opportunity to impact the community.
Besides having the satisfaction of knowing that you can save up to three lives with every donation, there are more incentives now than ever for you to donate. For instance, people who donate during the month of July will receive a light blue 55th Anniversary t-shirt in celebration of SRBC’s 55th year serving East Texas. In addition to receiving a t-shirt, donors who commit to donate blood three times a year by joining Club Red will earn special rewards. Club Red is a new donor loyalty program. For more information visit www.clubredstore.org.
Also, between now and Labor Day, come in and donate on a Tuesday or Thursday at any of our six locations and receive a “Pint for a Pint”. Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream has teamed up with SRBC to supply a pint of Haagen Dazs Light ice cream to every donor. Flavors are available in vanilla, chocolate or coffee. Also, until Labor Day, donors at any mobile blood drive or donor center will automatically be entered to win 2 SouthWest Airline tickets to anywhere in the continental United States.
