2nd Annual East Texas Battle for Life Begins
January will kick-off Stewart’s 2nd Annual East Texas Battle for Life event to help celebrate National Volunteer Blood Donor Month. Throughout East Texas, members of the community are encouraged to visit our donor centers and Wal-Mart mobile blood drives to make the commitment to take the time to make a difference in 2006 by donating blood throughout the year. The Wal-Mart location blood drives will be held January 2-6th. Hosting this event in January is an effort to help start the year with a great blood supply for our area hospitals.
While visiting a community blood drive or blood center ask about Stewart’s new Donor Loyalty Program, “Club Red.” Club Red allows donors to earn points for their blood donation and redeem them for great rewards such as polo shirts, tote bags, fleece, jackets etc…Schenck said that Stewart is asking donors to sign up for the program by making a commitment to try and donate blood or blood products at least three times in 2006.
“We need more people donating more often throughout the year, and to thank them we will offer double point days to help donors earn more points quicker,” explained Schenck. To kick off the program, every donor who signs up for Club Red will receive double points if they donate blood in January or February.
The Tyler donor center is now open from 8:30am-8pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and from 8:30am-6:30pm on Mondays and Fridays. Update - Stewart Regional Blood Center – Preparing for Hurricane Aftermath!
As a result of East Texas being in the path of the hurricane Rita and evacuees being in our 24 county coverage area, several blood drives have been cancelled. According to Lorie Schenck, Director of Marketing & Communications at Stewart Regional Blood, “Due to the potential of severe weather over the weekend our donor centers in Longview, Lufkin and Tyler will be closed on Saturday. Community blood drives at churches, schools and businesses are being cancelled for Saturday and Sunday. Palestine High School on Monday, September 26th is also cancelled. The cancellation of these blood drives means that once the bad weather is over we need our communities to come out in full force to make up for the blood lost over the weekend. We urge healthy individuals, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are at least 17 years old to donate life saving blood. All that we ask is that you bring a valid drivers license and eat a good meal before donating.”

Stewart Regional Blood Center – SouthWest Airline Giveaway Winner Announced
According to Lorie Schenck, Director of Marketing & Communications at Stewart Regional Blood Center, “Michael Ritter of Marshall is the winner of our SouthWest Airline tickets! Mike is a regular donor who made the special effort this summer to get his two donations in for the drawing. He has 72 lifetime donations, part whole blood and part apheresis and is currently working on his 8th gallon!” Mike said, “I never win anything, but was hoping I would win this! Everyone should donate blood on a regular basis because blood saves lives every day.”
Right now the message at the blood center and in our communities is “Be Prepared”. What we would like to emphasis to the communities we serve is that the recent influx of donors must continue in order to get and keep the daily blood supply in the good category, which means we would have at least a three day supply of blood. In the wake of hurricane Katrina we’ve had a lot of people come in to donate blood over the last few weeks which is helping to bring our supplies up to where they need to be on a daily basis to supply the patients in East Texas. Please make donating blood a part of your routine and donate at least four times a year.
On Tuesday’s and Thursday’s now through October 13th Stewart Regional is excited to team up with Brookshire Grocery Company to recognize our donors. When they donate blood at our Longview, Marshall, Mt. Pleasant, Paris or Tyler Donor Center or on any mobile drive they’ll receive their choice of a Brookshire Grocery Company coupon for a free gallon of Red Diamond Tea, a pint of Goldenbrook Ice Cream, or ½ gallon of Dairy Pride Orange Juice. According to Jim Pitner, Vice President Manufacturing Brookshire Grocery Company, “Teaming up to help the community is just a natural part of what Brookshire’s stands for. Stewart Regional Blood Center – Responding to Katrina–
Stewart Regional Blood Center is affiliated with national blood organizations that are currently assessing the need for blood products in the areas devastated by hurricane Katrina. Patients are being evacuated from hospitals in stricken areas and sent to hospitals in other cities where the blood supply has not been affected. As more victims are found and they begin recovery, the real need for blood will be known. It is then that we at Stewart expect we may be asked to assist in providing blood.
According to Bill Grimes, President/CEO Stewart Regional Blood Center, “Because we expect that it may be some time before blood centers in the affected regions are able to operate at full capacity, we want to be prepared to help. If you would like to donate blood, please contact one of our six regional blood donor centers and schedule to donate in the weeks and months ahead. Because the shelf life of a unit of blood is only 42 days, it is important that people donate blood on a regular basis to help keep the blood supply stable.”
While people living in the path of hurricane Katrina begin to rebuild their lives, others who escaped the devastation should step in and help by donating blood. Donors should understand that our regional blood supply must be sufficient to meet the needs of our own patients in East Texas before we are able to respond to the needs of patients outside our area. We welcome donors who want to assure that our supply is sufficient. Blood can be donated through our Hurricane Katrina Blood Pool, at any Stewart Regional Blood Center donor site or mobile blood drive. Your donation will not only assist the regional blood supply but will also generate a financial credit which goes to individuals who have been injured to assist with medical costs.
Those interested in donating blood may contact the following regional blood centers to schedule an appointment. Anyone who is 17 years old, weighs at least 110 pounds, and is in general good health may be eligible to donate blood. Please bring a valid drivers license and eat a good meal before donating.

Stewart Regional Blood Center Announces High School Scholarship Program
Stewart Regional Blood Center (SRBC) is proud to announce a new program designed to assist our local high school blood donors and high schools with the inception of a High School Blood Drive Scholarship Program. SRBC will award five scholarships in the amount of $1000 each to East Texas graduating seniors, within the 24-county region served by the blood center, who plan on attending a post-secondary institution. An additional $500 will be awarded to each winning student’s school for use in their senior graduation activities such as “Project Graduation.”
Eligible applicants for scholarships are East Texas graduating seniors for the 2005-2006 school year who have actively participated in their respective high school blood drive programs. Students can be blood donors, help in the coordination of the blood drives, or encourage others to donate blood. To participate in this program each student’s high school must agree to hold at least three successful blood drives during the school’s calendar year and that the school will hold blood drives exclusively with Stewart Regional Blood Center. Other criteria include:
- demonstrating outstanding personal leadership by participating in the coordination of the blood drive program
- a letter of recommendation from the blood drive faculty coordinator
- a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
- must be graduating from high school during this calendar year
- an official scholarship application must be received by the deadline (2/15/06)
“We are always impressed by the generosity of our region’s young men and women when they enthusiastically turn out for the high school blood drives,” stated Schenck. “High school students voluntarily donate approximately 20 per cent of all the blood collected annually in East Texas, and we are truly excited to give something back to them as they continue their efforts to save lives by donating their blood and time.”

Stewart Regional Blood Center – “Scramble for Life” Golf Event
Stewart Regional Blood Center is excited to present their annual “Scramble for Life” charity golf tournament, which will take place at Eagle’s Bluff Country Club in Bullard on October 10th. This event is held to raise money to continue the mission of providing a safe and sufficient blood supply to the communities the blood center serves.
A current priority for Stewart Regional Blood Center is the need for new transport vehicles, which are used by courier staff to transport blood and blood products from Stewart’s six fixed-site collection locations to 30 medical facilities in our 24 county service area.
“Our current transport vehicles have over 300,000 miles on them,” stated Kimberly Carter, Development Coordinator. “Many people do not realize that we are a not-for-profit organization and therefore depend on community support for much of our daily operations.”
Currently sponsorships are available with excellent exposure for any organization as well as player/team openings. If you would like to play in the tournament or sponsor the event, contact Kim Carter, Development Coordinator at 903-535-5452 or visit www.stewartblood.org. Registration and sponsorship form can be downloaded from the website.

Stewart Regional Blood Center – Volunteer Automated Blood Donors Needed
Stewart Regional Blood Center is seeking individuals to donate red blood cells, platelets & plasma utilizing automated blood donation processes that allow donors to give specific blood components; red cells, platelets and or plasma. According to Lorie Schenck, Manager of Corporate Communications, “As medical technology has made advances allowing people to live longer, technology in the blood industry is striving to keep up by helping donors to donate the blood products that are in the greatest demand. Different components of blood may be used for different patients and purposes. Red blood cells have a shelf life of 42 days and may be used by surgery, trauma, burn, anemia, or cancer patients. Plasma, the watery substance of blood may go to a burn or trauma victim to replace vital fluids. Plasma if frozen within 8 hours is good for one year. Platelets are the clotting factor in blood and can be used by leukemia & other cancers patients, trauma, heart surgery, anemia and transplant patients. Platelets have a shelf life of 5 days. As you can tell each and every one of these blood products is critical to the life saving efforts of the medical community. Stewart Regional Blood Center collects blood products utilizing automated procedures at the Tyler, Longview and Lufkin blood donor centers. If anyone is interested in donating using the automated donation process they should call ahead to schedule their appointments.”
All donors who donate blood before September 3rd will be entered into a raffle to win two airline tickets with Southwest Airlines. The winner will have the opportunity to fly anywhere the airline flies before the end of March 2006.
