Age
At least 17 years of age and in good general health. There is no upper age limit.
Weight
Minimum of 110 pounds.
Medications
- Must have completed antibiotics 24 hours after the receipt of last dose
- Must have completed Accutane, Proscar or Propecia 30-days from the receipt of last dose
- Aspirin as a preventative recommended or prescribed by their physician, but have not had any previous heart condition/disease are acceptable
- Antihistamines - if asymptomatic (no congestion, clear drainage)
- Oral contraceptives, mild analgesics, vitamins, replacement hormones and weight reduction pills are acceptable
- Blood pressure medication if blood pressure is acceptable and donor has no cardiovascular symptoms are acceptable
- Tetracycline and other antibiotics for acne and Rosacea are acceptable
- Medication for cholesterol control are acceptable
- Medication for migraines except for apheresis donations
- Anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxer medication except for apheresis donations Oral thyroid medication, if no cancer
Eating
Make sure to eat a meal within 4 hours before giving.
Drinking
Drink lots of water or juice before and after donating. Avoid alcoholic beverages for 12 hours before and after donating.
Allergy Shots
- 12 hours after shot received
- Cortisone/Steroid and antibiotic shots for asthma/allergies or infection, 2-weeks after receiving shot
Strenuous Activity
Avoid for 12 hours after donating. Individuals with a hazardous or strenuous job should donate at the end of their work shift.
Cancer
- Basal cell skin cancer, ok to give after healed
- squamous cell skin cancer, defer for one-year after removal
- Carcinoma Insitu, defer until a letter has been submitted from physician with full description of cancer diagnosis
Diabetes
- OK if controlled by oral medication and diet
- Diabetes that require insulin shots are deferred
Epilepsy
- Epilepsy, Convulsions and Seizures (with meds) are permanently deferred
- Epilepsy, Convulsions, Seizures (no meds) if seizure and medication free for a period of 2-years
Asthma
Ok to donate if no asthma attack in the past 7-days. Donor's that require an inhaler MUST have inhaler with them at time of donation.
